The annual gathering of migratory Monarch butterflies takes place along the lakeshore at Samuel Wilmot Nature Area in Newcastle, Ontario. Each fall, these remarkable insects congregate in large numbers as they prepare for their long journey south to their overwintering grounds. Enthusiasts and researchers alike come to tag and study them, contributing to important research on their migration.

I have wandered many of the beautiful nature trails throughout Durham Region, creating countless adventurous memories exploring these grounds with my brother during childhood and young adulthood. One autumn afternoon, the sunlight illuminated the falling leaves of a large tree before me, and I spotted a Monarch or two drifting by. In that moment, I imagined the start of a rejuvenating season ahead—a feeling that inspired the painting I created.
